Oh the things kids say and do!

Here's one from my sister's household:
Shayla, Tristan and I were up for a visit when Corrine's family was decorating their Christmas tree. Megan was going through the box of stockings and picking out each family members... this is Dad's, right Mom?... this is Moms... and Grayson's... She still hadn't found hers. She kept digging through the box and pushing aside the bright pink Zoe, from Seasame Street huge head on a slipper style stocking that she picked out herself last year.
Finally she gave up and looked up at her Mom, "Where's my stocking Mommy?"
"Right there honey, the Zoe one."
Megan picks it up, gives it a funny look and says, "No, that's silly!"
"Well you picked it out yourself last year, honey."
Megan gives it another looks, picks it up and says tentively, "Oh right."
Apparently what is cool when you are 3 is NOT what is cool when you are 4!!!

And here's one from our household:
We are sitting around the table eating dinner and Shayla looks over at me and out of the blue says, "I want to touch your bum."
"Pardon, Shayla?" I says as I think I have heard her wrong.
"I want to touch your bum, the one on your neck."
Thanks honey! I'm glad you don't want to touch my lower bum but am slightly dissappointed that the one on my neck stands out that much!
Unibrow and bum chin... some people get all the good facial features... try not to be too jealous OK!

Have a very Merry Christmas and blog to you in the new year!

Nipping inefficiency in the bud

We always did Christmas crafts with Mom when we were kids. Making candy necklaces was one of my favorites. And feels to me like something to do at Christmas... even though I guess it's not all that Christmasy!
Shayla seemed to have fun doing the project and even more fun waking up from her nap and consuming the whole necklace in one sitting!

And because the kids I am looking after all come on different days of the week, Shayla often gets to do a craft or activity more than once.
Although this time, on the second go around, she smartened up to the whole inefficiency of stringing the candy on to the licorice shoelace.
As I was helping the other boy I could hear Shayla saying, 'Oh no, it broke, I'll eat it. Oh no, it broke, I'll eat it.' Over and over.
Guess I shouldn't have bought the no name fruitloops I was thinking as I glanced over at her.
'Oh no, it broke, I'll eat it.' She says as her little fingers break the fruitloop in half and then she pops it into her mouth! She sees me looking at her, holds up the licorice string and says, 'Probably I'll just eat this too Mom.'
You go girl!

And here's Tristan and his Dad. Just cause they're so cute! :)

Little Drummer Girl

If only you all could be so lucky to be serenaded like this while making supper... and about 20 other times throughout the day!

Don't fret she's for hire... and you can have her for the whole day if you like!
And she's cheap. She works for gum.
She has a variety of song selections but here she is singing about eating pie on a trampoline. 2 things that she doesn't have.

Hey maybe that's what she wants for Christmas.
And since she is such a sweet little girl I think we'll get her what she wants!
Now do you think she'd prefer apple or pumpkin?! ;)

Our happy little family of 5! ;)

We had our Mom and Tot Christmas party last night. And the big guy in red even made an appearance!
A few of the kids even sat on his lap this year! Not our Shayla! She didn't have the scream of terror like last year but she wasn't getting too close. So, instead of just the kids, we got a family picture with Santa...

Introducing the Hodgsons! The happy family of 5! What... didn't you know Shayla has a sister?! Cute little Sophia! (Had to post this for you Megan! And because I had no idea she was even in the picture until I looked at it later at home. Did I ever laugh!)

I suppose I should explain why this is so funny.
So when Megan was back teaching we looked after Sophia and near the end of her time with us I realized that she was calling me Mom. I had thought she was just asking for her Mom... until she patted to the seat beside her, looked directly at me and said, 'sit Mom!' Oops! Apparently should have referred to myself as Kimberly a little more!
Then Megan told me that they had seen Clayton in town and he had popped his head in the vehicle to chat with them. When he was leaving Sophia started waving and shouting, 'Bye Dad!'
Oh dear! :)

I am glad it happened with Sophia and not some kid whose parent I don't really know... now I know to refer to myself as Kimberly, not I, when I am looking after other people's children. When I am NOT actually their Mom! ;) Lesson learned... thanks Sophia!

And this is why I laughed so hard when I flipped to this picture on my camera.

P.S. Sophia you can be part of our family any day! :)

Well that lasted just over a week!

And she has her 'sucky' back!
Yet I still feel like a failure for giving in.
Which leads me to wonder... what the hell is wrong with me?!!!
You'd think the last week we endured... where we were all sleep deprived and I became worst mother of the year... would have made me feel more like a failure.
But oh no...
giving my child something that makes her sigh deeply, roll over and go right to sleep ON HER OWN (even with a bad cough and plugged nose)...
now that's what makes me feel like I lost.
So I say again... what the hell is wrong with me?!!!

Bring on the judgers!
'Cause that girl is having her sucky until she goes to college!

And now it is time to go to bed and actually get a little sleep!
I can't wait!

One long time k

If Shayla came with a catch phrase, this would be it! One long time k!
At first I thought she wasn't saying it quite right. Like she was actually meaning to say: Just one more time OK?

Like when she is playing with her doll and pretending to burp it, she stops burping, turns doll's face to hers and says, one long time k and then starts burping again.

Or when she's kissing Tristan. She kisses his forehead and then touch his cheeks and says one long time k and then kisses him again.

Or if I tell her it's time to stop what she is doing and do something else. She'll say one long time k. And keep doing what she doing.

After a time I started to realize that maybe I wasn't translating quite right.

Like the other day when we were in the Hat and about to get in the car to go home and I remembered that I had forgot to get Shayla to pee when we left the passport office. I said, 'Shayla we forgot to pee lets go into the Dairy Queen and use their bathroom.'
A full on temper tantrum right there in the Dairy Queen drive through lane broke loose. Apparently peeing at a Dairy Queen is like asking you to cut off your right arm.

It was loud. It was shrill. It was shouting profanities. (OK so maybe Shayla wasn't doing the last thing. But then again I guess I didn't specify who was having the tantrum! ;)

Anyhow part way through she started shouting ONE LONG TIME K between screams. The shrillest, longest high pitched screams I have ever heard.

And this lead me to the realization that one long time K... really means one LONG time K!

That was one long time alright.

I seriously stood there not knowing what to do. What do you do?
No seriously I am asking you all... WHAT DO YOU DO????

Finally I got in the car and pretended to drive away.
Thank the Lord this worked.

Or someone might have been reporting me to Child Services!

Or maybe they did already... enough people got to see the show.

The hockey debate

OK all you hockey fanatics, now don't get me wrong... I like the sport of hockey.
I love fun filled winter hockey matches on our Grampa's pond.
And it is the only sport I actually don't mind watching on TV.
And any type of exercise is better then nothing.

I just don't want to give up my life for the sport!
OK OK there I go being selfish again.
But come on... don't you think it is a little ridiculous when every weekend, Sundays included, of fall, winter and early spring are filled with hockey games and travelling to hockey games.
What? You don't?
But what about all the practices on weekdays, sometimes at 5:30am?
Come on. A little ridiculous... no?
Oh and then to top it off... hockey camp in the SUMMER!!! And this all can start by the age of 3!
Ridiculous... yes!!!

And then Clayton goes and says something about well Kimberly it'll all be worth it when our kid makes it to the NHL and is supporting our asses. DON'T EVEN! Parents who dream of their kid making it to the NHL... and then proceed to get all crazy... while junior is out picking his nose on the ice and wondering if he'll make president of the chess club this year. Don't even get me started.

So the other day I say to Clayton, how about we meet in the middle... if our kids ask to go in hockey then we put them in hockey. But not before then and not if they don't show any interest.

And then Clayton goes and totally shocks me by saying...
Actually I don't think I want Shayla in hockey anyhow.

I don't know. She's a girl...

Oh calm down Kimberly. I just don't want her to be one of those macho, tomboy girls.

Not if we don't put her in hockey.

OK OK! Jeez Kimberly, she can play hockey if you feel that strongly about it.
He turned to walk away and as he did I caught the glimpse of a smile spreading across his face.

Which left me standing there with an open mouth, completely dumbfounded.

Did Clayton just beat me at my own game?
He did.
He just used WORDS to kick my ass to the curb!
How did that happen?
Using WORDS to get what one WANTS is what I DO!

Looks like I'll have to start watching Band of Brothers with the remote in one hand and a beer in the other.

The brave little boy

Today marked the day of Tristan`s first round of shots.

Poor Tristan, said Shayla, I will help him be a brave boy.
And she tried her best... I am sure she put her best foot forward and her brave face on. But sometimes it`s just really hard to be brave.

It went pretty much exactly like this:

OK Shayla, Mommy has to hold Tristan`s hands and leg tightly so the nurse can give him the needle, and you can help him be a brave boy and tell him it`ll be alright.

OK Mommy.

Shayla has on her brave face.
The needle goes in.
Shayla`s brave face turns white and blank.
Tristan cries.
Shayla`s eyes close and mouth opens and she lets out a blood curdling scream. Which gets louder with every needle and pretty much does not subside until we have left the building!

OK OK... they turned to sobs with random screams here and there... like when we were heading out the door and a Mom and 3 kids were walking in. The nurse says to them, no shots for baby today, just the big kids and they get 4 each I think.

I don`t know if she thought the nurse was talking to her or if she was trying to warn the other little girl to run for her life.
Either way I don`t think I`ll be taking her again to help her brother be a brave boy... there`s probably no way she`d walk back through those doors again anyhow! (Or that they`d let me back in with big sister in tow!)

And really her brother probably would have been fine after nursing except that there was this shrill screaming that just wouldn`t stop and kept freaking him out. And really wasn`t he the one who actually had the needle jabbed into his little leg and no one was paying much attention to him! Except for when the nurse started ringing the bell. Which I guess sometimes distracts the baby and stops the crying. There was just one problem... it was way too loud in that room to even hear the bell... I saw her ringing it but all I heard was screaming.

Poor Tristan!
Poor Shayla!
But also...
Sweet Shayla and sweet little Tristan!

It`s kind of nice to know she has a little (or a lot) of compassion.

Little Miss Megan

Late into our drive back to AB from BC we got a lesson in healthy eating from little Miss Megan:

Megan: I'm still hungry Gramma

Gramma: Would you like a granola bar?

Megan: Sure!

Megan gobbles down the granola bar.

Megan: Gramma...

Gramma: Yes Megan

Megan: Actually my Mom doesn't give me treats at bedtime. She gives me a healthy snack.

Gramma: Like apples or carrots?

Megan: No. Like popcorn twists.

Nice work Corrine... as long as they think it's healthy... right? ;)

More BC pictures!

Here are some more pictures of our trip to BC. Basically we rode horses and went camping. Just posting these pictures make me dread the up and coming season. I know I shouldn't... it's not going to do any good anyhow. But oh summer how I am going to miss you!

Our family with a view of Tappen Valley in the background.

A view of Adams Lake... and the rocky point where we set up camp.

Gannett Lake... a peaceful little mountain lake.

They caught lots of little fish. Shayla tried to get Grampa to throw all of them back in the water. Although, thankfully, they kept some as Shayla gobbled the fish up later at dinner. Shayla lost her rod in the lake... but that's ok Mommy, you can just buy a new one.

My flower child

And her little brother.

Dirt motorbiking (as Shayla calls it) with Auntie Ness, who is mountain biking around Cuba at the moment... I am a tad bit jealous! :)

Tristan hanging out at camp.

We made it to the farm in time to help move the cattle to some fall pasture. Shayla had lots of fun chasing the cows... and the bear even made an appearance during the cattle drive. :)

Tex... this in the horse I am hoping to bring out to AB next spring.

My lil' cowboy!

What a cutie! By the look on his face I can already tell he is going to pick 4-H over hockey! hehehe! (So there Clayton!!! ;)

Thanks for another great visit!

Well we are back from BC and had a great time! Of course we had a great time. I am always a little sappy when I get back. I always have so much fun out there because if you really like where you came from then you really like being there and inturn really miss it when you're gone. Who knew?! Plus two certain people are pretty cool like that... see picture below. Thanks Mom and Dad for always making such great memories with us whenever we see you! 'Farm Gramma' 'Farm Grampa'
Another reason we have so much fun... because it's always a party when you're at Farm Gramma's!

*This is a really cute video of Shayla dancing. When I tried to view it I was told error try again later. So I am hoping you'll be able to view it later after I post it! If any of you blog and can give me any advice on why I seem to have trouble uplaoding videos... that would be awesome!

The farm animals of Tappen

Dad was pedaling out to the barn to feed the animals... I didn't realize he was the actual feed! ;)
Mom and Shayla were already at the barn and on their way back. Shayla was a little scared of the bear. And when I saw the pictures I didn't blame her... that's a pretty big bear and they are pretty darn close!!!

Earlier that same day Shayla and I got to be cowgirls and herd cattle up to their fall pasture on horseback. This same guy ventured out onto the road in front of the cows... the cows won that face off!
Too bad Clayton didn't get a picture then... it looked pretty cool.

Out in BC and having a blast of course!

PS. Corrine the weather is beautiful... high 20s and no sight of rain! hehehe! (Too bad all I brought was long pants! ;)

Welcome baby Tristan!

Well just like it took you a long time to get here... it has taken me a long time to post your welcome blog!

Tristan Oakley 9lbs 7oz born at 6:26am on August 13.
We are so glad you are here!

We are really enjoying getting to know you. And watching Shayla be such a helpful big sister.
Today I was canning peaches while both my sweeties were napping and you woke up first and nursed and then were laying contentedly on your blanket. After a short while Shayla came wondering in, just waking up from her nap. You were getting a little fussy and I asked Shayla if she could get you your soother. First she was just drinking some water and ignoring you and then as you started to cry a little louder she put down her water.
'Ok baby, ok, ok, ok baby.' She says as she heads to the living room to get your 'sucky'!
She then got it in your mouth and you quieted down and she lay down beside you on the blanket. It was so sweet!

So far you have been pretty content. Eating, sleeping and pooping! I guess we'll see what a few more weeks of age brings!

Here are some pictures of your big arrival. Which took about half the time of Shayla's... thank you Tristan. ;) (Although pushing your head out... ouch! I screamed... apparently very loudly as your father told me to shush. To which I shouted... DO NOT TELL ME TO SHUSH! At your one week appointment I told Dr. Edwards this and, after measuring your head circumference, he told me to tell your father I had every right to scream! Thank you Dr. E!)

Just a little entertaining chit chat

I have to share a phone conversation held between Megan and Shayla recently. I always put it on speaker phone when they are talking, because who'd wanna miss out on hearing this:

Hi Aunty. Can I talk to Shayla?

Oh hi Megan, how are you?

Can I talk to Shayla.

Yup. Just hold on I have to get her. What are you up to?

Hi Shayla.

Just a minute Megan I have to get her.

Even I can take that big a hint!
So I pass the phone to Shayla.

Hi Shayla!

Hi Shayla what are you doing?

I play withth a wrock.

What'd you say Shayla?

Grey wrock.

What Shayla?!

Wrock. Big wrock Meegan.

Wrock. Black wrock. As Shayla is pressing the rock into the phone to show Megan.

Mommmmm Shayla wants to go for a walk. Corrine says something in the background which Shayla hears.

I talk to Aunty Cream.

What'd you say Shayla?

Aunty Cream.

Should I go on... oh... you get the picture!!!

Cutest thing ever!

So the secret's out!

A few nights ago our neighbours... the ones with 4 kids and a trampoline that Shayla has been dying to jump on... invited us over for dinner.

They are a very nice family. Three girls and one very busy boy! In the same order as us Gooch kids actually. The father is a farmer and pastor at a church in town. He was very helpful, answering all of Clayton's questions, before we actually decided to put an offer in on our new house.

Anyhow, the evening of our supper invite, Shayla was very excited and spent as much time as possible jumping on the trampoline before dinner. When dinner was ready everyone went inside to dish up.

Of course, as we had anticipated, everyone bowed their heads for grace. Everyone that is except Shayla who, glancing over at the oldest girl with a bowed head and closed eyes, immediately shouted at the top of her lungs... WAKE UP!!!

Great Shayla... I'm sure they suspected but now they know for sure we're heathens! ;)

Note: No one laughed at the time but whenever I think about it now I have to chuckle... I can only imagine what was going through her little head... like why are all these people napping, it's time to eat don't they know!!!

Happy 100th Birthday Grandma Hodgson!

'Great' Grandma's birthday was on July 15th... but better late then never right?!
July 15th... that's when you were suppose to come baby! Because how cool would have it been to be born on your Great Grandma's 100th birthday!!!
OK actually I was quite content with you not coming that day... there was still lots to be done around the house and yard. So thanks for holding off.

P.S. Baby... I'm ready for your arrival now!!! ;)

Anyhow... we had a great time at the 100th party. We are pretty lucky to have celebrated 2 Grandma's 100th birthdays! Clayton your side of the family has some amazing longevity! To which Clayton replied... well in the women anyhow!

100 years old and not looking a day over 99!!! I kid! Clayton's Grandma is amazing... she is still walking on her own and has a totally fit mind! If I live to be 100 I hope I am as fit as her!

Cute cousins, the ones that never fight, Zoe and Shayla. (OK sometimes they fight... just not quite as hard as a certain cousin combination!!! ;)

Happy 100th Grandma!!!

New house... and finally a new post!

Well here are some pictures of the new house! Taken at dusk... but that's as good as it's going to get right now! We have been so busy... and enjoying it. Clayton has yet to hook up the satellite... so we must be busy. ;)
I have to get some pictures from Mom of all the before and all the painting as I didn't take any. Other then Shayla and Megan painting her purple wall!
I am sure you'll figure out which room is which so I am going to refrain from writing any more details as it is late and time to go to bed. I put up a picture of our closet because it is probably triple the size of our old closet and yet still jammed packed!!! Which has seemed to be the theme of the whole place... apparently we had a whole lot of crap jammed into our old little house! Crazy!
Also notice all the berry bushes... and come pick! The raspberries are ripe and endless... please come! :)

To the downstairs... not totally finished... so we'll get to that later!
Thanks for checking in after such a long break from posting.

And a huge THANK YOU to our Moms, my sisters, and everyone else who helped us clean, paint, move and unpack... I can't believe we got it all done in 9 days!!! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!
